Hi, Karl -

This was a lovely testament to how far I have come from the negative, critical, resentful mothers that raised me.

Interesting that you spoke of bad behavior traffic in this email message, because I practice driving generosity year-round, but especially as my winter holiday gift to my community. During Christmas/Hanukkah/all the other world religions' winter time holiday season, I leave extra early for errands and I leave extra space for the stressed drivers to get into traffic ahead of me. It's such a small gesture, but I can do it multiple times a day and watch the relief it brings to those driver's faces. I return home so grateful that I don't suffer their stress, and happy that I can give such simple gifts as much as I want without depleting any of myself.

3 Levels of Gratitude


  • Level 1: Surrounding gratitude. Things around you that you appreciate. From a warm home to a simple sip of water. We often take these things for granted if we don’t tune our minds to them.

  • Level 2: Sharing gratitude. When you share gratitude with someone else you lift their spirits as well as your own. People want to work with you and are more likely to help you when you show gratitude for others. I know I struggled with showing gratitude and I’m just starting to come out of my shell and make it a regular habit.

  • Level 3: Self gratitude. This is the hardest for most people. They are more willing to be grateful for a comfy bed or a good cup of coffee than they are able to feel grateful for themselves. That’s why it’s the most advanced gratitude level. We don’t take the time to appreciate who we are and how beautiful we’ve become, even with all our warts and mistakes that occur on a regular basis.

Science shows that a few seconds of being grateful makes your life better.
